This meta-analysis of six European cohorts reports statistically significant associations between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and autism spectrum symptoms, directly opposing the consensus that no causal link exists. However, the divergence is methodologically important: observational cohort studies are inherently susceptible to confounding by indication (mothers who take acetaminophen may have underlying conditions or fevers that independently affect neurodevelopment), and the study cannot establish causation from correlation. The reasoning risks a correlation/causation confusion by treating a pooled association as evidence of a causal pathway, and may engage in cherry-picking by aggregating only European cohorts without accounting for the sibling-controlled designs that eliminate familial confounding.
